Do I need to have a virtual machine on an Azure instance to host an ASP.NET application?
I know that you can host an ASP.NET application on a Windows instance inside of the Azure Virtual Machine, but are there any other gotchas that I need to take into account when planning a deployment? Does it take any special kind of schema? Would I be better off setting up an Azure Worker Role for this application, and hosting in Web Sites for deployment purposes?
If you have read the documentation on Windows Azure and ASP.NET, you will understand the differences between the azure website and azure worker roles.
Azure Website is a fully managed, scalable, versioned cloud application which allows you to upload your code and the rest is handled by azure. The main problem with this approach is that it only allows static files. This is where Windows Azure Websites substitute in.
Azure Websites is a free, self-hosted, solution which allows you to have an Azure Website with full hosting capabilities. And as the name implies, it allows you to upload your code. So basically, you can deploy an Azure Website and web role together or separately.
Windows Azure Worker role vs Azure Websites?
Windows Azure Worker role is almost similar to the Azure Websites, but you cannot upload the app directly to the role. Instead, you must build a XAP file and then upload the XAP file to the role. If you need to modify a part of your code, you can build a new XAP file which will overwrite the old one. All you have to do is to get a new version number and upload it to the worker role. This approach is highly recommended as it allows you to modify your code without the risk of losing your data (Azure Websites).
From a performance standpoint, Azure Worker roles are much slower than Azure Websites and worker role. This is because Azure Websites and worker roles are fully managed and are in full control of the storage and cpu resources.
You do not need a VM to run an ASP.NET application. In fact, it probably makes no sense to do so.
You can deploy to either the virtual machine Windows Azure web site or the self-hosted Windows Azure application service.
